Medicover Polska is piloting a new service: hearing testing and hearing aid selection

One in two Poles over the age of 74 may have hearing loss. This problem affects 30 percent of people between 65 and 74 years of age. Impaired hearing has a negative impact on overall well-being, relationships with loved ones and life quality. In this situation, appropriate diagnostics performed by a hearing care professional and choosing the right device that will help the patient hear better, are very important. In response to these needs, Medicover Polska is piloting a new service - hearing testing and hearing aid selection.

Hearing problems are a natural consequence of aging processes in the body. However, they don’t only concern older people. They can start as early as the age of 30-40. We want to meet the needs of people who are affected by these difficulties, which is why we decided to pilot a new service and include it in our offer.

Maciej Malenda from Health Innovators by Medicover, the initiator of the project.

The test is carried out in a special sound-insulated room. The patient, using a special button, signals when he hears the sound that is generated from the audiometer to the headphones. Answers are measured at individual frequencies and sound levels. The test result is given in the form of curves called audiograms, illustrating any disorders of the hearing organ and the amount of hearing impairment.

Hearing diagnostics are performed by a certified hearing care professional using clinical measuring devices. The visit takes about 30 minutes and does not require special preparation. Hearing tests are performed in adults and children over 6 years of age,

Katarzyna Głowińska, Director of the Aleje Jerozolimskie Medicover Centre.

If hearing loss is diagnosed during the hearing test, the specialist may select a hearing aid at the time of the visit.

Proper selection of the hearing aid affects the final effect of hearing, speech understanding and quality of life. In order to select the best hearing aid, the hearing care professional analyses the results of the hearing test and interviews the patient to learn about his hearing problems. This information helps determine individual hearing needs and select the devices that will meet them.

During the visit, patients try on various types of hearing aids at different technological levels, to compare their hearing quality and choose the best option for them. In the case of most hearing aids, the ear piece is shaped to fit the ear canal, so the hearing care professional takes an imprint of the patient’s ear during the visit.

After selecting the hearing aid, it is lent to the patient, free of charge, for 3 weeks to test their hearing in everyday situations, to assess the comfort of use and adjust it to the patient’s lifestyle. During this time, it is possible to fine-tune the hearing aid and adjust its settings, which also takes place in the office of the hearing care professional.

The pilot programme "Hearing testing and hearing aid selection" at Medicover Polska runs from 17 January through 30 April 2018. The service is available at the Aleje Jerozolimskie Medicover Centre in Warsaw.

Gum disease (periodontitis) is, along with caries, one of Poles' most common dental diseases, affecting nearly 50% of adult patients. Although the problem is serious, only one in ten of us is diagnosed or treated for this condition [1]. Undiagnosed and untreated periodontitis has very serious consequences. When untreated, it may even lead to tooth loss, so it is worthwhile to pay more attention to the prevention of periodontal disease. [1]
