Preliminary dental check-ups online help to fight dental fear

How does caries treatment proceed? What specialist should you consult for your dental problem? Why are your gums bleeding? What kind of tests will the dentist refer you to when your teeth are hypersensitive? Answers to these and other questions can be found in the app called Short Internet Check-up ("Krótki przegląd internetowy"). The idea was conceived by the DentaCare clinic, which is part Medicover Polska. Its purpose is to reduce the fear of dental treatment and to motivate patients to make regular dental appointments.

Medicover Polska research shows that more than 50% of patients are motivated to visit the dentist by the desire to keep their healthy and beautiful smile for as long as possible. At the same time, only about 1/3 of patients declare that they have regular dental check-ups. Although postponing check-ups usually causes problems to escalate, patients often avoid those visits because of the fear of dental treatment.

Poles usually visit the dentist only when they are anxious about something or when they feel pain or discomfort. We are afraid of the dentist because we have memories, sometimes very unpleasant, of past dental treatments. As a result, we often downplay the symptoms we feel and postpone the consultation. At the same time, up to 90% of Poles suffer from caries, and only one in four people over 35 has all of his or her own teeth.

In order to motivate patients to care for the health of their teeth and visit the dentist regularly, the DentaCare clinic network launched the application Dental Consultation Online. Short Internet Check-up ("Konsultacja zębów online. Krótki przegląd internetowy.").

It is the first solution on the Polish market to enable to quickly check the condition of one's teeth online. The application helps to mentally prepare for the dental visit, giving the patient preliminary information about his or her problem, possible treatment, tests and procedures.

Using the application, the patient fills in a short online survey so that the app can locate and define the user's dental problem and subsequently provide recommendations for further action. The application, based on a special algorithm, determines possible causes of the condition and suggests ways to deal with it.

Short Internet Check-up takes into account both general oral problems, like uneven teeth, jaw or mandible pain, bad breath, tartar, bleeding, tooth hypersensitivity, teeth grinding, and diseases, such as caries, toothache, discoloration, tooth mobility, chipped teeth.

The tool is meant to expand the patient's knowledge about his or her problem and related ailments, and consequently facilitate the contact with the dentist. After completing the diagnostic survey, the application suggests optimal solutions to the problem, such as changing daily habits or going to the right specialist.

This virtual dental check-up enables to download the results, which can later be sent to the dentist or taken to the visit, thus accelerating the treatment process. The tool also has an educational dimension. Patients can read articles written by experts and learn more about dental prevention.

The application is available free of charge for every patient at or

Gum disease (periodontitis) is, along with caries, one of Poles' most common dental diseases, affecting nearly 50% of adult patients. Although the problem is serious, only one in ten of us is diagnosed or treated for this condition [1]. Undiagnosed and untreated periodontitis has very serious consequences. When untreated, it may even lead to tooth loss, so it is worthwhile to pay more attention to the prevention of periodontal disease. [1]
